“Where Life Is Precious, Life is Precious” – Ruth Wilson Gilmore
Ruth Wilson Gilmore is an abolitionist geographer that writes about the geography of prisons and incarceration. She argues that abolition isn’t just about the absence of prisons and harmful structures, but also “the presence of life-giving systems that allow people to thrive and be well, that prevent harm and….address harm when it occurs”
A few months ago I was reading some of Ruth Wilson Gilmore’s work and some of the quotes sounded like they’d make such cool poetry / writing prompts so this zine is really inspired by her work!
Here are some of the prompts I came up with 🙂
“In the soil of my childhood:” What places, plants and animals are important to you, how do they shape how you see the world?
Abolition Geographies: In an ideal world what does the land you live on look like?
Life is Precious: What prevents us from valuing and feeling connected to the Earth / each other? How does this relate to other forms of oppression?
